The ASAPS’s recently released data revealed a 12 percent hike in cosmetic procedures in the U.S. last year compared to 2012. In all, more than 11 million cosmetic procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical, were performed.
Liposuction topped breast augmentation to become the most popular surgical procedure, posting a 16 percent increase.
The top five most performed surgical procedures last year were:
- Liposuction, with nearly 364,000
- Breast augmentation: 313,327
- Eyelid surgery: 161,389.
- Tummy tucks: 160,077
- Nose procedures: 147,966
Leaders of the ASAPS said advances in technology, the availability of less-invasive procedures and better accessibility to care for patients are leading more and more people to undergo aesthetic procedures and treatment.
Officials said the improving economy also played a part in more people investing in cosmetic procedures for themselves. Labiaplasty and buttocks augmentation recorded the highest increases in procedures performed over the previous year.
Women underwent more than 10 million cosmetic procedures – more than 90 percent of all those performed. Since 1997, the number of women undergoing cosmetic procedures has skyrocketed by 471 percent.
The top five surgical procedures selected by women were:
- Breast augmentation
- Tummy Tucks
- Breast Lifts
- Eyelid Surgeries
While women continue to dominate when it comes to cosmetic procedures, men are opting for surgery as well. Men totaled than a million cosmetic procedures, or about 9.5 percent of the total. Male cosmetic procedures have jumped more than 273 percent since 1997.
The top five surgical procedures that men chose were:
- Eyelid surgery
- Nose surgery
- Breast reduction
- Ear surgery
Officials also found that patients are researching potential procedures online in record numbers.
For nonsurgical options, Botulinum Toxin (think Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) held onto the top spot as the most frequently performed noninvasive procedure, recording a nearly 16 percent increase over 2012.
Overall, nonsurgical procedures went up 13 percent last year to 9.5 million.
The most-performed nonsurgical procedures included:
- Botulinum Toxin: Nearly 3.8 million
- Hyaluronic Acid: Nearly 1.9 million
- Hair Removal: More than 900,000
- Microdermabrasion: About 480,000
- Photo Rejuvenation: Nearly 457,000
Last year saw more than $2.5 billion spent on injectable treatments. Nearly $2 billion was spent on skin rejuvenation, which is among the fastest-growing treatments.
ASAPS leaders said the significant hikes in cosmetic procedures, surgical and otherwise, appear to prove that people are again willing to spend their hard-earned money to improve their appearance – perhaps because they again have increased disposable income.
With the economy continuing to improve, industry leaders said they expect the number of cosmetic procedures to increase once again this year.
