Injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) have gotten much publicity as many famous athletes report being treated with it, crediting it for their quick return to sports competition after suffering injuries. It has also made it into the news as part of a skin rejuvenation technique called a Vampire facelift. Some doctors are even using it to treat hair loss, urinary incontinence, and infertility. It is also being considered as a treatment for osteoporosis.
While PRP has many applications, at Las Vegas Laser and Lipo, we offer Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments for cosmetic concerns including facelifts, skin rejuvenation, and breast lift.
Blood is composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are essential for forming clots in the case of injury. However, they are also highly concentrated packages of growth factors. When the body suffers an injury, platelets rupture and release both their growth factors and their blood clotting factors. The clot stops any bleeding, and the growth factors induce the injured tissues to heal.
Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from the patient’s blood. The blood is extracted, and the red and white blood cells are removed, leaving behind platelets suspended in plasma. The platelets are then concentrated in a centrifugation procedure.
The use of platelet-rich-plasma for rejuvenating the skin, hair follicles, and other body parts affected by aging is simply an extension of its use to treat chronic injuries. Exposing aging tissues to a burst of healing growth factors may be able to induce the tissues to repair chronic damage and revert to a more youthful physiology.
There are no major risks or side effects to using platelet-rich plasma. Because it is prepared from the patient’s blood, there is no risk of rejection or infection transmission. If proper sterile procedures are followed, there is practically no risk of infection associated with injections of platelet-rich plasma. Anesthetic agents are often used to reduce any discomfort associated with injections of platelet-rich plasma.
