A recent study reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that older women and men who have cosmetic procedures done receive effective and safe treatment – and suffer from no more complications than younger patients.
Officials said with more older people opting for cosmetic surgery, patients and medical professionals need to take a closer look at potential complications of such procedures on the growing population of seniors.
Officials said the recent study determined that patients over the age of 65 who underwent cosmetic procedures had a rate of complication nearly identical to complication rates of younger patients.
With older Americans the fastest growing age group nationally, larger numbers of women and men age 65 and up are choosing to have cosmetic procedures to enhance their appearances.
In the study, officials reviewed data over a five-year period from 2008 to 2013. The information review led officials to determine that post-op complications for elderly patients occurred at the rate of 1.94 percent.
That is nearly identical to the complication rate found among younger people who underwent such procedures. That rate was found to be 1.84 percent.
In the study, the mean age for older patients was about 69 years old. The mean age for the younger group was about 39.
The similar rates of complication among the two age groups came in spite of age-related health issues that more of the older patients were dealing with. Some older patients had higher BMIs — or body mass indexes — and higher rates of diabetes.
Another finding indicated that younger patients smoked more than their older counterparts. The senior patients’ smoking rate was 3.4 percent. Younger patients smoked at a rate of 8.5 percent.
Even very old patients did well after having undergone cosmetic procedures. The study found the post-surgical complication rate of patients in their 80s came in at 2.2 percent.
That’s statistically insignificant compared to the slightly lower complication rates of patients over 65, and the younger patients.
The study found that elderly patients were more likely to opt for facial procedures than the younger group. The only procedure in which older patients encountered higher rates of complication than younger patients was abdominoplasty.
