The combination of aging and childbirth can cause the vagina and urethral area to lose their natural firmness and tone. Increases in laxity in this area can lead to leaking of urine, vaginal dryness, and loss of sexual satisfaction. Surgical procedures (vaginoplasty, pelvic floor reconstruction) are available to tighten and firm the vaginal area, but now there is a minimally invasive technique to achieve similar results with less pain and downtime: FemiLift.
How does FemiLift Work?
FemiLift uses a powerful 30 watt carbon dioxide laser to deliver thermal energy to the vagina and urethral area. The heating causes contracture of the tissues, for an immediate firming and tightening effect. The heat increases blood flow to the area, which can improve symptoms of vaginal dryness. The laser also induces the body to produce more collagen and elastin, to naturally restore a more youthful structure to the lining of the vagina. The laser technology used by FemiLift is similar to the laser technologies used to achieve laser facial resurfacing.
What to Expect
During the FemiLift procedure, the laser will be slowly and gently inserted into the vagina and then removed. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes, and there is no recovery time. Patients can immediately return to their normal activities. Sexual intercourse should be delayed for 4 to 5 days after a FemiLift procedure. Patients report there is only minimal discomfort during the procedure from insertion of the laser, and a sensation of warmth. No anesthetics are necessary.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients will need three treatments at 4-week intervals to achieve the desired result. During your consultation, Dr. Zimmerman and our medical team will be able to recommend a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.
Immediately after a FemiLift procedure, the skin of the vagina will be tighter and firmer, which will immediately improve symptoms of urinary leakage and lack of sexual satisfaction. The regenerative process whereby the tissues naturally produce more collagen and elastin and develop a more youthful structure takes around 2 months to complete. The tightening effects of FemiLift last for 18 to 24 months, after which the procedure can be repeated.
FemiLift only treats the lining of the vagina; it does not treat weakened and damaged pelvic muscles. For best results, patients should consider performing exercises (e.g. Kegel exercises) to tighten the muscles in conjunction with FemiLift. Doctor Zimmerman can explain how to perform Kegel exercises correctly during your consultation.
Most patients experience a slight discharge for a day or two after the procedure. In rare cases, there may be some minor vaginal bleeding after the procedure, and there is a very slight risk of infection.
Patients who are pregnant or who are planning to get pregnant soon should wait until after delivery before having FemiLift. FemiLift procedures do not affect the ability to conceive and deliver a baby, but delivery will stretch out the vagina and reverse the effects of prior FemiLift procedures.
