Losing weight and obtaining the beautiful body that you want is not always related to your dietary and exercise habits. Engaging in regular exercise and eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet provides the foundation that you need for good health; however, it does not necessarily get rid of those last few pounds. When you want to look amazing and shed a little extra fat, liposuction might be a good choice for your goals.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction refers to the removal of excess body fat from trouble areas. It helps slim down the area and provides a beautiful shape to the body for an appearance that provides confidence and improves self-esteem.
There are three main types of liposuction:
- Laser assisted liposuction
- Tumescent liposuction
- Ultrasound assisted liposuction
All three options remove excess fat, but the process varies slightly. Tumescent liposuction is a traditional approach that removes fat with a tube. Laser assisted and ultrasound assisted liposuction liquify the fat and then remove it with a smaller tool.
Benefits of Liposuction
The primary benefit of liposuction is removing excess fat from trouble areas. For example, removing excess fat from the stomach, waist or thighs. It is not used as a treatment for obesity; rather, it is used to help with shaping and slimming areas that are not responding to diet and exercise.
Although it is primarily used for cosmetic reasons, it can also help with certain medical conditions. For example, it is appropriate to use liposuction for benign fatty tumors. Generally, you will need to discuss specific medical benefits with a doctor before using liposuction as part of a treatment program. In most cases, the treatment is used for shaping and improving the appearance of specific areas.
Risks of Liposuction
Liposuction is generally a safe and effective treatment. The risks associated with the procedure are limited; however, there are some potential side effects. In most cases, some slight swelling, bruising or irritation around the treated area will occur. It will generally fade after a short period of time. Some individuals will also scar at the incision site. Although it is rare, some individuals will have pigmentation changes on the skin after the treatment and nerve damage can occur in rare cases.
Who Qualifies for Treatment?
Liposuction is not appropriate for every situation. Generally, it is best when you have trouble areas like the arms or thighs that you want to slim down and shape. The treatment is also appropriate as part of another cosmetic procedure like breast reduction or a tummy-tuck.
It is not an appropriate treatment for weight loss or for weight-related medical conditions. Discuss the treatment with a medical professional if you have any medical concerns that may cause complications during treatment.
Liposuction offers a realistic solution when you are trying to create a beautiful body and have stalled in your weight-loss efforts. By shaping the body and removing some of the excess fat, your body will look amazing and you will improve your self-confidence.
