Labiaplasty generally refers to the reduction of the labia minora or labia majora, the inner and outer vaginal lips. This procedure offers numerous benefits to women who may be uncomfortable with the size or shape of their labia.

Here are some of the great benefits of labiaplasty.
For women who have elongated inner labia, underwear and clothing can rub against sensitive skin, leading to irritation and profound discomfort. For some women, this can lead to embarrassment or even wearing only loose clothing to avoid friction and/or pinching. For those who have larger outer labia, many are concerned about how pants fit and worrying that people around them can tell their labia are bigger than society considers normal. Some women are also worried that their inner or outer labia will potentially protrude from swimsuit bottoms. This can cause not only physical discomfort, but psychological discomfort and loss of confidence as well.
In terms of how the labia affect sex, it is important to remember that regardless of size, many women find their labia quite sensitive while others do not. Large inner labia can easily be pinched during intercourse, ruining the experience or causing serious pain. After repeated instances of this, women may worry more about avoiding this than they do about enjoying the sexual experience.
In some cases, the labia can also impede access to the clitoris, reducing sexual pleasure. This can be repaired by having a clitoral hood reduction along with the labiaplasty. Women also may feel, whether true or not, that intimate partners do not like their bodies because of the size or shape of their labia. This can form an additional barrier to intimacy and sexual expression in an effort to keep attention away from what they perceive as a serious physical flaw.
Because of the prevalence of women in pornography who have picture perfect, often nearly invisible labia minora, women may feel that their intimate space is unattractive. Labiaplasty is one way to deal with this uncomfortable feeling in a concrete and permanent way. For women who have endured multiple vaginal births, the procedure can reverse some of the effects, returning the labia to their pre-pregnancy appearance. Combined with vaginoplasty, women can often return to how they looked and felt prior to giving birth, which can have a profound effect of sexual comfort, confidence and even pleasure.
About the Procedure
Reports indicate that between 90 and 95 percent of women who undergo labiaplasty are pleased with the results. The procedure generally does not require hospitalization and is most often performed as an out-patient procedure. Post-operative pain is minimal, although some women experience swelling for several days after the surgery. For this reason, women should not judge the success of the results until at least one week after the labiaplasty. It may be necessary to abstain from intercourse for four weeks after surgery to reduce the risk of infection and or discomfort.
Labiaplasty is becoming a more commonplace procedure with the number performed increasing 44 percent between 2013 and 2014. With the benefits offered by the procedure, this increase is by no means surprising.
