Micro needling is a minimally invasive procedure that actually stimulates new tissue growth by causing tiny puncture wounds. Unlike surface abrasion techniques, the creation of tiny wounds causes the body to respond by building up new growth as well as producing collagen and elastin. This technique is recommended for those who are suffering from thinning skin, the appearance of age wrinkles, and slight discoloration of the epidermis.
How Needles Stimulate Skin Growth
The instruments used in micro needling vary according to the type of skin being treated. Most are of the roller type that consists of a cylinder covered in small, very fine needles measuring around 2 millimeters in length.
When the skin is punctured, the damage to the dermal layers is minimal and controlled. The underlying tissue is very sensitive to puncture wounds. The body responds by sending nutrients to the injury sites, and the production of collagen increases.
Each puncture creates a small void, and the body fills these voids with fluids containing nutrients that build up healthy tissue. The results are not immediate, but gradually the skin becomes firmer, more elastic, and smoother to the touch.
Wrinkles often fade away because the new skin is thicker and more moisturized.
An Inpatient Treatment Method
No special pre-treatment care need be performed by the client prior to micro needling. Depending on the areas to be treated, one or more instruments may be used.
The skin is thoroughly cleaned, and a mild topical anesthetic is applied. The roller instrument is passed over the area to be treated, and the needles puncture through the skin layers to the upper levels of the supporting tissue.
The entire procedure lasts less than one hour, and when the needling process is complete, the skin is given a salve moisturizer. Some redness may occur, but this soon dissipates.
Professional Micro Needling Versus Home Treatments
We do not recommend using skin needling or collagen induction therapy instruments at home. These treatment products are not designed specifically for your skin type and can cause irritations and even unwanted tissue damage.
This is why we ask patients to schedule a consultation with us to determine the right method of promoting new skin growth. Our in-house dermatologists are trained to use the latest needling instruments and are ready to design a customized treatment schedule for you.
